about

The majority of the song was recorded in the first week of November, 2013, but the original demo was recorded in late 2009. However, I didn't like it at the time and forgot about it.

I rediscovered the song not long ago, and decided to keep the old bass part I recorded in 2009.
Next thing I did was strip all the other old instruments away and re-record them, along with major changes to the arrangement - so basically, it's a completely new composition.

I played the drums first, followed by my piano part, which originally weaved throughout the entire piece. However, the piano sounded too much like Maroon 5's 'This Love', so I made major changes to that too.

Next up were my guitar parts, and this meant cranking up my amp to window-breaking levels (in suburban Burnside, no less) and thrashing out the intermittent riffs, numerous arpeggios and the soaring solo, which was intentionally reminiscent of Brian May's work.

The final instrument recordings came from the Hammond organ and Rhodes piano arpeggio parts during the verses. These lovely sounds (including the piano) are courtesy of my phenomenal Nord Electro 4 keyboard, what a weapon that instrument is!

Last of all, vocals - pretty straight-forward. Just the usual 'Harmernies'...

All of my mixing was done on the fly, while recording. It seems to be the best way for me to work, and enables me to keep and ear on the big picture while making the song. I never forward-plan my music, so it all has to be done by feel… I couldn't even tell you what the chords are on this track!

Enjoy. Recorded exclusively in my bedroom.

lyrics

Dust settles on his trail, the sun goes down
He's been here but he never had to stick around
I'm not even sure he's going very far at all
Fifty dollars says he turns around before the night falls

There's a girl out west with jewels in her eyes,
and a hunger in her heart to say
"holocaust, monstrosity, inner curiosity"
It's such a fine day to play

There's a red sky at dawn saying "trouble in the air tonight"
The man with the leather jacket always looking for a fight
The stirrups on his boots rattle with the chains in the wind
A hunted look in his eyes gave away his numerous sins

There's a girl out west with jewels in her eyes,
and a habit of entering the fray
Her itchy trigger finger with the thumb on the hammer
keeps a lot of bad men away

Na na!
You think you're so cool with your smile
Na na!
The colour is gone from your eyes
Na na!
Look at your fancy new car

Mummy's gonna save you, mummy's gonna save you

You're foaming at the mouth for a bottle on your lips again
You're gonna die in this desert if you don't have a drink my friend
You use your empty glass as a missile flying through the air
Your fluid's running out but your MUMMY gives you every care

There's a girl out west with jewels in her eyes
Maybe you should try to hitch a ride
Maybe I'm a crazy man who cannot understand
that you can't just run and hide

Na na!
You think you're so cool with your smile
Na na!
The colour is gone from your eyes
Na na!
Look at your fancy new car

Mummy's gonna save you, no one's gonna save you
